BUH Foundation Celebrates Success of Virtual Golf Tournament

June 15th 2020

North Battleford, SK – Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation wrapped up its 2020 Virtual Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament (WPMGT) on Friday, June 12th.  Through the support of sponsors, golfers and donors, the Tournament reached Hole #14 and raised $40,390 for healthcare in The Battlefords.

“We are very pleased with how well the Virtual Tournament did.  While we didn’t complete all 18 holes, we still received wonderful support from our sponsors, golfers, and donors, including some new participants who could join due to the new format,” shared Claudette McGuire, BUH Foundation Executive Director.  “We are grateful for everyone who came out, helped promote this Tournament and raised funds for healthcare.”

The Tournament kicked off on Friday, May 15th, with Master Sponsor Innovation Credit Union, “golfing” the first two holes.  Innovation Credit Union has been a part of the WPMGT since its inception and BUH Foundation Board of Directors and WPMGT committee are proud to have them as a long-time supporter of the Tournament.  To “golf” or complete each hole of the virtual course, $3,000 was raised through sponsorship, golfer registration donations and other donations.

“This was definitely a new format for the WPMGT, but we are so pleased that we could still hold the 24th Tournament and continue the legacy of golfing for healthcare and honouring Wayne’s memory.  It was wonderful to see the friends and family of the Tournament join in the tradition, in a non-traditional format,” expressed Sue Pruden-McIvor, BUH Foundation Board of Directors Chairperson and WPMGT committee member representative.  “Thank you to everyone who joined us in “golfing together while staying apart” and who made this Tournament so successful once again.”

The Virtual Tournament marked the 24th year of the WPMGT.  The traditional Tournament was reformatted to ensure the health and safety of all participants and to comply with the restrictions that were in place due to COVID-19.  The online, virtual format, allowed for everyone to safely participate and help raise funds for healthcare.  For the first time in many years, there was no waiting list to join the WPMGT and participants didn’t even have to know how to golf.

“We are just so honoured that we could hold the 24th Tournament and not have to forgo it completely, due to the current circumstances.  It means a lot to us to have everyone recognize the importance of the Tournament and its impact on healthcare in The Battlefords.  COVID-19 doesn’t cancel healthcare and we are so pleased it couldn’t stop us from “golfing” together and fundraising for new medical equipment at BUH,” shared McGuire.

Proceeds from the 2020 Virtual WPMGT will purchase new, up-to-date medical equipment for BUH and makes a difference for the healthcare providers and patients.  Since its beginning, the WPMGT has raised over $500,000 for healthcare and has purchased medical equipment for BUH and Battlefords Region Home Care (BRHC).

BUH Foundation has a WPMGT Golfer & Volunteer Pledge, as the dedicated and loyal participants have seen it all and golfed through anything and everything over the years.  This pledge has been updated to mark the 2020 Tournament, because we know the Pruden golf family is there no matter what.

WPMGT Golfer & Volunteer Pledge
Not snow, nor rain,
nor hail, nor sleet...

Not missing balls or aching feet,
Not even a pandemic!

Will stop me from golfing The Pruden.
