NB Senior Citizens Action Now Club Supports Mammography Campaign

December 13th 2018

Thank you to North Battleford Senior Citizens Action Now Inc. Club for their Christmas donation of $5,500 to enrich patient care at Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH).  The NB Senior Citizens Action Now Inc. Club have been supporting BUH Foundation since 1993 and we are grateful for their contributions.  It is a pleasure to join them at their Christmas gathering each year and to be the recipient of this generous donation.

Their donation will support the current fundraising campaign, "We Want to... Catch It! Stop It! Treat It!" in support of a new, up-to-date mammography unit for Medical Imaging at BUH.  A mammography unit is used for breast screening exams to detect breast cancers when they are small and treatable, as well as for diagnostic exams, where a lump or symptom is present and further follow-up is required.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, but can occur in men.  In Canada, 1 in 8 women are expected to develop breast cancer during their lifetimes and mammography screening has proven to help improve survival rates.

BUH currently performs 2000 mammograms in a year and sees four to six (max) patients every day for diagnostic exams. Patients are from within The Battlefords as well as surrounding communities, including northern regions. The current mammography unit is ten years old, has reached its end of life and can require parts to be replaced or repaired. The new technology available can benefit patients with a decreased dosage of radiation, quicker scans and 3D technology that provides high quality, detailed images to provide greater accuracy and confidence in analyzing images to detect cancer. The fundraising goal for the new mammography unit is over $500,000.
