$2,000 Scholarship Awarded

August 15th 2009

Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation (BUHF) is proud to award its first of two Roche Scholarships to students pursing education and a career in medical laboratory sciences.

The first $2,000 Roche Scholarship will be awarded to Battleford resident Ashley Seib at a presentation in the BUH Lobby at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2009. Ashley has been accepted into the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon. She wants to begin her career at Battlefords Union Hospital when she graduates in 2011.

"BUH Foundation is very pleased to be involved with this Scholarship and appreciates the generosity of Roche Diagnostics in contributing toward a local student attaining her Medical Laboratory Technology career," said Cheryl Gantefoer, Chair of  BUH Foundation Board of Directors.

The Roche donation followed Prairie North Health Region and the BUH Foundation;s 2007-2008 major purchase, installation, and commissioning of a new Cobas 6000 Blood Analyzer and its supporting components from Roche for the Battlefords Union Hospital Laboratory department.

Recognizing the need to recruit and retain qualified medical laboratory staff for BUH and Prairie North Health Region (PNHR), Roche contributed $4,000 to the BUH Foundation to be used specifically for a one-time scholarship for students entering Medical Laboratory Technology, Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology, or Medical Laboratory fields.

In consultation with PNHR, decision was made by BUH Foundation to use the funds to offer two Roche Scholarships of $2,000 each to students who satisfy the criteria established, including the intention to apply for employment in Medical Laboratory Services at BUH, Lloydminster Hospital, or Meadow Lake Hospital. Only one scholarship is awarded for any of the three hospitals, on a first come, first served basis. Applications are invited for the second $2,000 Roche Scholarship.

The mandate of BUH Foundation is to enhance patient care by serving as the primary fundraising agency for Battlefords Union Hospital.
