Hospital Bed Purchased in Memory of Howdy McPhail

North Battleford, SK - Donations made in memory of Hugh D. (Howdy) McPhail to the Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation went to purchase an electric bed for the Medical ward at BUH.

Howdy, as his friends and family knew him, was a community minded individual. His varied career included being a fighter pilot in World War II and owning and operating a Crop Spraying business in the Battlefords area for over 30 years. He was also an active participant in politics all of his life. Howdy passed away on March 28, 2001 at BUH after a bout of illness.

“Howdy found the manual beds to be uncomfortable during his stay, therefore I thought it would be an asset for other patients to benefit from an electric bed during their hospital stay,” said Dr. Mary MchPhail, Howdy’s wife.

Hospital beds are not very glamorous items but nevertheless they are an essential part of any hospital. The patient’s ability to freely adjust their position without a nurse’s assistance makes them the preferred bed for both patients and nurses.

The bed has been in place and in constant use since December of 2001.

“On behalf of the BUH Foundation’s Board of Directors, I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the family of Howdy McPhail for their assistance in enhancing patient care at BUH,” comments Janice Sander, BUH Foundation Executive Director.
